Tangram is an ancient Chinese puzzle for both the young and the old. From China, Tangram has been brought to the west by sailors around 1800. It is unclear where the name Tangram comes from. It is possibly of English origin. The old English word for a puzzle or toys was trangram and this word might later have been degenerated to Tangram.
The game consists of 7 geometrical forms, the seven Tans. With these seven Tans one can play in three different manners. 1. The solving of certain puzzles of which the outline is the only given (see the silhouettes in this booklet). 2. With imagination and humour, there are more than 1600 silhouettes of characters, animals and forms possible to layout. 3. The solving of mathematical and geometrical problems, e.g. in how many different manners one can construct a regular pentagon or a parallelogram with these seven Tans .
